Carbon Fiber in 2011 and Beyond
Carbon fiber is now a household name in many industries. As the start of the year 2011, more industries have paid close attention to the development and improvement processes of their respective products. Careful consideration paved the way for the material to be included as one of the most significant addition and enhancement to each of their products and crafts.
Take for instance is the automobile industry. Just recently, the highly regarded CAFÉ or the Corporate Average Fuel Economy set up a new regulation for fuel efficiency which will be effective by next year across the nation in all newly manufactured light to medium-duty passenger cars as well as light trucks. It is in this regard that many car companies started shifting their focus just to meet the CAFÉ standards. BMW spearheaded the upgrade by incorporating more carbon fiber in its parts in all three of its models namely the Coupe, Sedan and Convertible. This year and for the years to come, the deck lid spoilers used, as well as the mirror caps and front splitter will have carbon fiber technology and the result is more effective in rigidity, lightness and aerodynamics.
The fibers used are also the same as the material used in the roof panels. To make it even better, individual pieces are coated with ultraviolet-resistant laminate that helps the automobiles be easily damaged by yellowing, cracking or any forms of degradation. As additional enhancement, the manufacturers cover each piece with warranty.
Following BMW on the trend very close behind is the Mercedes Benz by using carbon fiber in its car body parts. As early as now, the company already teamed up with Toray, a popular Japanese company, engaged in producing textiles and plastics. The team up resulted in the production of plastic reinforced with carbon fiber to significantly reduce the cars' weight. The result was unbelievably effective! When applied with CF technology, the vehicle's weight was reduced by 33%, which resulted in a more or less 23% fuel reduction. This is the company's way to meet the standard set by CAFÉ.
Corvette kept up with the trend when the company released the 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition. As a tribute to it's 50th Anniversary racing history in 24 Hours of LeMans, this edition only has state-of-the art materials including its engine cover made from carbon fiber.
In automobile industry, we will definitely see more uses of carbon fiber in the future as they upgrade and develop to even better the vehicles and to qualify for the standards and regulations. Beyond the best is 2011!
