How to Prepare for Installing 3M Di-Noc Film
It is not necessary to be a professional vinyl installer in order to apply 3M di-noc films to the object that you want to have an appearance of carbon fiber vinyl. The only thing that you need is a few tools and the correct preparation and your vehicle, garage door or countertops can be covered in this vinyl. The following are the steps to follow to prepare for installing 3M di-noc film:
- Warm up Installation Area – On days when it is chilly or cold outside, it's vital to warm up the installation prior to laying the carbon fiber vinyl on it. The adhesive that's used is heat sensitive and if the area is too cold, it does not attach properly and can lift and peel off. Use a heat gun or a blow dryer to warm up and install the vinyl one section at a time. It's also important to use the blow dryer or heat gun when applying the vinyl to corners or rounded areas of the installation site. Keep the heat on the section when dropping the vinyl in these areas; you may need a helper to ensure that the vinyl stays warm during installation.
- Proper Lighting and Cleaning – It cannot be stressed enough that the area where you are working is clean and has proper lighting. You need to be able to see where the seams should meet and the finer details of the installation process. You can get a cheap floodlight if working when it is dark or overcast or if your work area is improperly lit. The area where you are working also needs to be completely free from dust and debris or it can become lodged underneath the vinyl during the application process and this causes the vinyl to bubble. These bubbles cause the vinyl to lift and shorten the life of it.
- Take Measurements of All Application Areas – Before you even begin the installation, you need to measure each application area carefully and cut the vinyl to the proper size. This material, while not as expensive as real carbon fiber, is not cheap and should not be wasted by improper measurements. If it is dropped before it is cut to size, it can buckle or crease and that means that it has to be removed and reapplied with a new piece of the material. Measuring saves money and time for the installation to be completed.
While the application process is one that you need to take your time with, it is just as important to make sure that the area where the installation is to occur is clean and well lit. It's also vital to measure every single place where the vinyl is to be installed so that there is no waste of the 3M di-noc vinyls and no waste of your time by having to reinstall it. When it is cold outside, use a heat gun to warm up the area so that the vinyl's adhesive can attach to it properly and securely without chance of lifting off.
