What is activated carbon?

Carbon is the most abundant element on earth. Amongst the most common forms of carbon are coal, coconut shell, wood, peat and lignite.

Carefully selected raw materials are processed at low temperatures to remove natural volatile components and residual moisture levels. This is the initial carbonization/ charcoaling step. This is followed by passing the carbonized raw material through high temperature activation kilns. The resulting product is a powerful adsorbent with a range of pores of molecular dimensions. This high concentration of pores within a relatively small volume produces a material with a phenomenal internal surface area (800-1600 m2/g BET N2). To put this into perspective, a tea spoon of activated carbon would exhibit a surface area equivalent to that of a football field. It is this vast internal surface area that gives activated carbon its unique ability to adsorb a wide range of compounds from both the liquid and gas phase. The target compound/ contaminant are contacted with the activated carbon and subsequently diffuse into the internal pore structure. The internal surface area of the activated carbon exhibits weak Van der Waals forces which adsorb the compound into the pore structure.

How activated carbon is produced?

Activated carbon could be produced by any of the following process.

Steam Activation process:

It is a process, which involves two separate process. Carbonization, it is a process of removing natural volatile components and residual moisture levels of organic matter ( coconut shell, peat, wood, etc.,) in inert atmosphere followed by activation process.

Activation is done by heating of carbonized organic matter in kilns at high temperature and blowing  steam at high pressure generating carbon monoxide and Hydrogen thus removing carbon atoms  and activating it to form porous material for adsorption activities.

Chemical activation process:

It is a process where carbonization and activation takes place simultaneously. Saw dust particles of any organic material is mixed with phosphoric acid and heated in kiln.

Phosphoric acid act as a dehydrating agent and prevents sawdust from getting burnt into ash and penetrates the natural pores of the organic matter thus creating the more internal pores.

Phosphoric acid deposited in the pores are recollected and reused for further activation.
Most popularly used chemical for activation is food grade phosphoric acid and there are also other chemicals used  in this process but banned due to pollution problem ( they are potassium hydroxide &   zinc chloride).
