Nutrafin Carbonate and General Hardness Test Kit $13.99 General Hardness is a measure of all the dissolved salts in the water. This concentration of dissolved salts affects the osmotic regulation systems in fish. In addition, General Hardness influences calcium levels in the blood. The General Hardness should correspond to the original habitat of the species being kept. Carbonate Hardness (commonly called alkalinity) is a measurement of the capacity for water to neutralize an acid, known as the buffering capacity. It is an important component of water chemistry because it helps stabalize water pH. Carbonate Hardness is also an important source of energy for nitrifying bacteria that eliminate ammonia and nitrite. In addtion carbonates are used by plants for photosynthesis when carbon dioxide is absent. |

Tropic Marin Bio Calcium Supplement 20lb $109.99 Tropic Marin Bio Calcium Supplement Powder Enables the addition of biologically ideal calcium to the reef aquarium: All calcareous animals, especially corals need calcium and carbonates to grow and flourish. However the growth rate of corals depends mostly on the zooxanthellae (algae) that live symbiotically within them. These algae present the coral with precious carbohydrates of their own metabolism. As they photosynthesize, they use carbon dioxide from the water, which enables the coral to precipitate calcium carbonate in its skeleton. Only when calcium and carbon dioxide are available together can this symbiotic relationship work. Tropic Marin Bio-Calcium is the ideal source of both calcium carbonate for the corals and carbon dioxide for the zooxanthellae. Many calcium supplements add undesirable by-products to the water, or like Kalkwasser, influence pH. When Tropic Marin Bio-Calcium is dissolved in the aquarium, all 70 trace elements are added and no unnatural by-products are formed. Tropic Marin Bio-Calcium will not alter the pH level if used in accordance with the instructions. Natural sea water contains on average 400-410 ppm of calcium and is typically saturated at this level. It is important not to exceed 450 ppm, as super saturation can result in the calcium surplus precipitating out of the solution, taking desirable trace elements with it. We recommend the use of a Tropic Marin calcium test kit and Tropic Marin Bio-Calcium to ensure these proper calcium levels. Features: . Enables addition of biologically-ideal calcium . Helps restore the crucial magnesium/calcium ratio . Offers optimal skeletal growth . Re-creates and conditions to natural reef levels Item Specifications: Size: 18oz |

Seachem Reef Carbonate 2 liter $16.19 Seachem Reef Carbonate Reef Carbonate™is a concentrated (4,000 meq/L) optimized blend of carbonate and bicarbonate salts designed to restore and maintain alkalinity in the reef aquarium. Calcium and carbonates are essential to all coral growth. If either becomes deficient, coral growth will cease, followed by a rapid decline in coral health. To prevent this you must provide carbonates (Reef Carbonate™) and calcium (Reef Advantage Calcium™ or Reef Complete(R)). Used as directed, Reef Carbonate™ will not deplete calcium, magnesium, or strontium which usually tend to precipitate with increasing alkalinity. Reef alkalinity should be maintained at 3-5 meq/L (8-14 dKH). Alkalinity should not be allowed to fall below 2 meq/L. Whereas competing products simply use sodium bicarbonate, Reef Carbonate™ is made with a blend of carbonate and bicarbonate salts. This blend of salts results in Reef Carbonate™ yielding a pK of roughly 9.0 in saltwater (higher than competing products). In a closed reef system, the multitude of organics produced by reef inhabitants tends to force pH downward, but the advantage of Reef Carbonate's™ higher pK is a stabilization of pH around 8.3-8.4. Competing products' formulations make them incapable of such a claim, so pH will always fall below desirable levels for a reef aquarium. Features: . Concentrated (4,000 meq/L) optimized blend of carbonate and bicarbonate salts . Helps restore and maintain alkalinity in the reef aquarium Item Specifications: Size: 2 liter 4 liter Directions: BEGINNER: Use 1 capful (5 mL) per 80 L (20 gallons) twice a week. Best if diluted into a cup of freshwater, then added. Check alkalinity every 2 weeks and adjust dose or frequency accordingly. ADVANCED: Check alkalinity, then follow dosing regimen above until alkalinity is adjusted to 4-5 meq/L. Each dose will raise alkalinity by about 0.25 meq/L. Size or frequency of dose can be adjusted, but do not exceed 1 meq/L per day. Thereafter, use as required to maintain alkalinity. EXPERT: After determining the alkalinity consumption rate, set up a continuous drip system. Use the following formula to determine how much to add to your top-off water: m=va (m=mL of product to add to top off water, v=volume of tank in gallons, a=amount to raise alkalinity in meq/L). For example, if you want to raise alkalinity by 1 meq/L in a 50 gallon tank, then you would add 50x1=50 mL into the top-off water. HINTS: Best to pour in gradually near strong water movement. Do not add to a sump or other area of slow water exchange. |

GCSEPod® Chemistry - Uses of Calcium Carbonate in Construction
What is Coral Calcium and Where Does it Come From?
Coral calcium is a dietary supplement said to be derived from "remnants of living coral that have fallen from coral reefs, as a result of wave action or other natural processes. According to the coral calcium infomercial, taking coral calcium can cure up to 200 human diseases including heart disease, cancer, diabetes etc. When you start taking coral calcium, your body alkalizes and drives out the body's acidic state. Coral calcium is composed of mostly calcium carbonate, just like those you found in Tums or other calcium carbonate supplements from your health food stores.
Coral is composed of tiny, fragile living organisms called coral polyps. Coral reefs are among the worlds most fragile and endangered ecosystems, strict laws are enforced to preserve them. Since coral reefs are protected by law, "coral calcium" is made by grinding up dead coral called limestone that no longer contains live organisms. Coral grains are mined from fossilized coral beds on the coastline, and pumped from coral beds in shallow waters. Coral calcium supplements come from fossilized coral beds. Since it is severely illegal to mine "live" coral reefs, coral calcium has to come from a different source which is dead coral loaded with calcium and trace minerals.
For people who need to consume extra calcium, coral calcium may be the best choice. The body absorbs coral calcium better than other calcium supplements in the market mostly due to the trace minerals also found in coral. The calcium content of coral calcium ranges from 24% to 38% and is composed primarily of calcium carbonate. Ninety-eight percent of people over age 60 are totally calcium-deficient meaning, they are not consuming enough calcium to sustain current bone density.
Most of the body's calcium is stored in the bones, which can release whatever amounts are needed to maintain adequate blood levels, this causes bone loss. Historically, calcium supplements haven't always been safe: years ago calcium carbonate from bone meal or oyster shells, for instance, was used in some supplements -but was later found to contain high levels of lead and other heavy metals. Now with new technology and strict government laws calcium is very safe.
Like many other supplements, coral calcium is beneficial to your body in many ways. And unlike other calcium supplements, coral calcium does have special properties that make it worth strongly considering as a supplement to your daily diet, mainly trace minerals. Almost every cell in the body, including those in the heart, nerves, and muscles; relies on calcium to function properly.
Calcium deficiency can weaken bones (osteoporosis), but it does not make the body more acidic or cause a wide range of diseases. The body needs about two times as much calcium compared to any other mineral. The body of an unhealthy person is acidic, or has low pH this acidic state cause's disease. Over 35% of the body's mineral makeup consists of calcium, which literally performs hundreds of operations essential to our everyday lives. Are you getting enough?
Consumers should be aware of the claims that coral calcium can treat or cure cancer, multiple sclerosis, lupus, heart disease, or high blood pressure are not supported by existing scientific evidence. Most of the health claims being made about coral calcium from Okinawa are based on the fact that the Okinawan's are among the world's longest lived people and supposedly drink water containing coral calcium.
In conclusion, there is no medical evidence to support these claims, and coral calcium has been identified by the United States Food and Drug Administration as a Fake Cancer Cure Consumers Should Avoid. Most of the claims are based on how calcium can bring the body into a more alkaline state and this alkaline state strengthens the body and helps it fight disease over time. Knowing this, have you had your coral calcium today?
