Curtis Island LNG A Cleaner Alternative
Crude oil, or petroleum, has been used by mankind for over 4,000 years, but, it was not until the 1850s that a process was invented to distill kerosene from the raw material. As a fuel for lighting, kerosene created huge demand for crude oil, and this demand increased dramatically with the invention of the internal combustion engine. Since that time, our world has continued to depend heavily on oil as an energy source, not only for lighting and transport, but in the manufacture of one of our most versatile materials, plastic. This dependency has become unhealthy and a source of concern should it run out, and the race is on to find an alternative source.
The Surat Basin in Queensland has huge reserves of coal seam gas, and this is one option that energy companies world-wide are exploring. It is planned to extract the gas from the coal seam underground, and pipe it to Curtis Island LNG plant at Gladstone for conversion into gas. As the project will require large quantities of steel pipe Brisbane companies are gearing up to be major suppliers.
Apart from the obvious need to replenish the world’s diminishing reserves of energy, the major attraction of this project is that natural gas is cleaner hydrocarbon energy than coal, and is suitable for use in both domestic and export markets. Unlike crude oil which requires considerable processing, coal seam gas requires little treatment before it can be used in homes and industry.
With concern about global warming rising and science now making links between the rise in temperature of our atmosphere and the huge floods and major storms happening around the world, interest in clean energy continues to build. To general the same amount of energy, natural gas emitts 22 per cent less carbon dioxide than oil and 40 per cent less than coal, thus making it vital for the overal health of the atmosphere.
The project is expected to create 4,000 jobs during construction and 1,000 permanent jobs on its completion. The gas will be transported to the Curtis Island LNG plant via a 380 kilometre buried natural gas pipeline. Steel has traditionally been used for this type of project, and for quality in pipe fabrication Brisbane contractors have the industry accreditation, experience and knowledge to undertake this work.
Although the future predictions for how climate change will affect Earth are dire, the development and expansion of natural gas as an alternative source of energy will be a key weapon in our arsenal for saving our planet. The human race has shown in the past that it can develop technology to overcome barriers, while at the same time, protecting the environment and improving our quality of life.
