Carbon Strategies: How Leading Companies Are Reducing Their Climate Change Footprint $42.95 "Climate change's impacts cut across all functional areas of a business. The systematic approach proposed in this report will be very helpful to business managers concerned with integration of business activities in operations, marketing, finance, and human resources to support a consistent, pro-active strategic response to climate change."--Karen Flanders, Director, Corporate Responsibility, The Coca-Cola Company ""Carbon Strategies" captures the risks, and opportunities, for companies in an increasingly carbon-constrained marketplace. This book will be invaluable to any executive seeking insight into strategies for success in this changing business climate."--William L. Thomas, Americas Environment Head, Clifford Chance US LLP "For any manager who has been charged by the CEO to develop a climate change strategy, this book is for you. It offers plainspoken wisdom garnered from over 30 companies on how best to address climate change as a business issue. It takes much of the guesswork and expense out of testing unproven ideas, and puts you on the right path towards addressing this critical issue in a way that benefits the bottom line and the environment."--Fred Krupp, President, Environmental Defense "In order to preserve the stability and growth of the world's economy and all of the opportunities it affords, we must protect the global environment. Climate change represents one of the most significant issues of risk and reward facing CEOs and investors today. Hoffman offers a very helpful framework for the analysis."--Michael Klein, Chairman and Co-Chief Executive Officer, Citi Markets & Banking Vice Chairman, Citibank International PLC "Future generations will look back with either admiration or despair, judging how well we, in these early years of the twenty-first century, addressed critical climate-change issues. Over the past six years, even as Entergy's sales increased more than 20 percent, our emissions have been held to near 1990 levels. We applaud Andy Hoffman and the Pew Center's success in creating a fact-based constructive dialogue among various stakeholders, while offering effective solutions to meet the needs of future generations. With the best intentions of everyone, we can give our grandchildren a planet that we changed for the better."--J. Wayne Leonard, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Entergy Corporation "While climate change presents a daunting array of potential challenges, there are also real opportunities if you know where to look for them. "Carbon Strategies" provides approachable, pragmatic, and actionable guidance for companies who are ready and willing to turn climate-related risks from a liability into a competitive advantage."--Brian M. Storms, Chairman and CEO, Marsh Inc. "We hear far too often that the constraints of 'business as usual' prevent real action on global warming. In this important and timely book Andrew Hoffman demon |

Carbon Trading Law and Practice $199.42 In Carbon Trading Law and Practice, author Scott D. Deatherage provides practitioners with a comprehensive practical guide to the US and international practice of carbon emissions trading. The book includes a comprehensive examination of climate change, emissions trading, international and EU law, other reduction programs, carbon credit financing, and the US regulatory regime for emissions trading. The use of market-based systems as a means of regulating emissions and other environmental pollution or degradation is a growing phenomenon. As nations and states appear to be responding to scientific pronouncements regarding the existence and causes of climate change, environmental markets appear to be one of the main tools that will be used to address greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon Trading Law and Practice provides the fundamental explanation and the underlying legal systems and issues that serve to create and sustain carbon credit creation and the trading of these credits, and a series of related legal and business issues. |

Clean Development by Own Resources- Why the Money for Greenhouse Gas Reduction Projects Is Raised in the South $44.88 The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) has become a key element of the global response to climate change. Projects in developing countries can generate emission reduction credits that can be sold to governments and companies of industrialized countries and then be used for compliance with the emission targets under the Kyoto Protocol. While it had been thought that CDM projects would normally be done by companies from industrialized countries that invest into projects in the South, it is now common practice for companies in developing countries to set up the projects with their own funds and sell the emission reduction credits on the market. We look at the history of this "unilateral" approach and analyze the reasons that lead to its attractiveness. Case studies show which countries have a promising potential for unilateral CDM projects. The book aims at practitioners of the global greenhouse gas markets, government officials who want to understand the driving forces behind the CDM and at policy analysts who want to assess possibilities for future climate policy instruments. |

Comparative Analysis and Benchmarking: Corporate Strategy Analysis of Four International Pharmaceutical Companies $25.72 This research of corporate strategy analysis implements comparative analysis and benchmarking to analyse and examine the corporate strategy of the pharmaceutical sectors of 4 international pharmaceutical companies. This research adopts the hybrid approach of combining qualitative and quantitative methods in a two stages research design. Quantitative method is applied first to deal with the comparative figures, and then qualitative method is used to find out the problem. The design of this multiple research includes three phases: data collection, analysis, and reporting. The findings of this research can be divided into 4 parts: R&D/marketing, technology alliances, strategic acquisitions and merger, and manufacturing. The drug innovative projects are recommended being developed within the company's familiar therapeutic areas in order to take its marketing advantage. Through this comparative analysis, some of this type of problems of these international pharmaceutical companies is identified. A big pharmaceutical company forming alliances with some small biotechnology companies has become a trend within pharmaceutical industry since 1980s. For pharmaceutical companies, to take advantage of R&D through biotechnology is the main purpose of alliances with small biotechnology companies. It is important to note that most pharmaceutical acquisitions belong to the type of absorption with high resource transferring and low autonomy. Due to the high profit margin and the essential importance of R&D and marketing, the operation management of manufacturing of pharmaceutical industry is relatively poor. The low asset utilisation rate pointed out this problem. Academic researches have revealed thatexisting theories of operation management of manufacturing, such as action research, set-up reduction, teamwork, continuous improvement, collaboration, and involvement, are applicable and beneficial to pharmaceutical industry rather than waiting for the technology breakthroughs. |

Office Design and Fit Out Company to Hold Seminar: The Carbon Reduction Commitment and Landlords
Practical guidance and advice on the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC), the new regulatory legislation facing landlords, property owners and large businesses, is the focus of a seminar from London office design and fit out company, Morgan Lovell.
The breakfast session, due to take place on Wednesday 23rd September at Morgan Lovell’s Noel Street office, will provide advice on capturing and monitoring energy usage, as well as covering many of the legalities surrounding the CRC.
Legal guidance will be delivered by James Spreckley, partner at leading London and Birmingham law firm, Martineau. James will cover the purpose of the legislation before discussing some of the implications and what it means to future and existing leases.
Morgan Lovell’s sustainability manager, Lara Conaway, then will provide practical solutions to prepare for the CRC, including a demonstration of new technologies that will help monitor and measure energy usage in buildings.
The session will end with an optional tour of Morgan Lovell’s wireless mesh metering solution, after which delegates will be invited to join the speakers for a complimentary breakfast and networking.
Lara said: “Most businesses are now well aware of the CRC legislation, how it works, and the cost implications and penalties of non-compliance. This session is designed to give practical advice and guidance to measures that landlords and property owners can put in place now, in preparation for the commencement date in 2010.”
Starting at 8.15am, the session includes breakfast and qualifies delegates for CPD credits..
An alternative date has been organised in Birmingham on Tuesday 13th October in Martineau’s offices. Further details including online registration can be found at http://www.morganlovell.com/events.
