Carbon Credits and Global Emissions Trading

$20.49

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Environmental Sciences, printed single-sided, grade: 1,0, Vrije University Brussel (Solvay Business School), course: Advanced Technology, language: English, abstract: The ongoing process of changes in the global climate system is rather undisputed these days, as it is evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice as well as rising global sea levels. Moreover, while the exact causes for the currently observed increases in global temperatures are yet to be established, a growing consensus is emerging that at least part of it is human-caused. As a result, various panels and organisations have emerged throughout the world, which are working on strategies how to reverse or at least halt this process. As Kolk & Pinske point out the resulting climate policies across different sectors and locations are diverse. Various companies are trying to restructure their operations in order to reduce waste and to make their processes more energy efficient. A number of governments are enacting policies to replace CO2-intensive energy, released through the burning of coal, oil and gas by more environmentally friendly, so-called 'clean' energy, such as wind, solar, or hydroelectric power. Others are resorting back to nuclear power asserting that the actual risks of this technology are by far not as high as they are perceived to be or as they were some years ago. A further alternative that has recently been implemented by the EU is a 'cap-and-trade system' for energy-intensive industries, which defines strict limits for the absolute amount of emissions. While the responsibility for complying with this regulation rests with the companies in the respective industries, they are free to find ways how to stay within the limits. Compensating for emissions by purchasing carbon credits is one prominent option available to companies in this respect. Purpose of this paper wi

Carbon Trading Law and Practice

Carbon Trading Law and Practice

$199.42

In Carbon Trading Law and Practice, author Scott D. Deatherage provides practitioners with a comprehensive practical guide to the US and international practice of carbon emissions trading. The book includes a comprehensive examination of climate change, emissions trading, international and EU law, other reduction programs, carbon credit financing, and the US regulatory regime for emissions trading. The use of market-based systems as a means of regulating emissions and other environmental pollution or degradation is a growing phenomenon. As nations and states appear to be responding to scientific pronouncements regarding the existence and causes of climate change, environmental markets appear to be one of the main tools that will be used to address greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon Trading Law and Practice provides the fundamental explanation and the underlying legal systems and issues that serve to create and sustain carbon credit creation and the trading of these credits, and a series of related legal and business issues.

Clean Development by Own Resources- Why the Money for Greenhouse Gas Reduction Projects Is Raised in the South

Clean Development by Own Resources- Why the Money for Greenhouse Gas Reduction Projects Is Raised in the South

$44.88

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) has become a key element of the global response to climate change. Projects in developing countries can generate emission reduction credits that can be sold to governments and companies of industrialized countries and then be used for compliance with the emission targets under the Kyoto Protocol. While it had been thought that CDM projects would normally be done by companies from industrialized countries that invest into projects in the South, it is now common practice for companies in developing countries to set up the projects with their own funds and sell the emission reduction credits on the market. We look at the history of this "unilateral" approach and analyze the reasons that lead to its attractiveness. Case studies show which countries have a promising potential for unilateral CDM projects. The book aims at practitioners of the global greenhouse gas markets, government officials who want to understand the driving forces behind the CDM and at policy analysts who want to assess possibilities for future climate policy instruments.

NO PART OF THIS BOOK MAY BE REPRODUCED IN ANY FORM, BY MIMEO GRAPH OR ANY OTHER MEANS, WITHOUT PER-, MISSION IN WRITING FROM THE PUBLISHERS. PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TO MY PEOPLE PREFACE The purpose of this book is to deal with the problem of foreign credits from a practical point of view. I have, however, presented some of the basic principles of international trade, without which it would be im possible to reveal the essential characteristics and the mechanics of foreign credits. Before 1929, export business was accustomed to following simple mechanical procedures that had been tested and approved by long years of experience. As soon as the exporter received an order from abroad, he shipped the goods and within a reasonable length of time the impoiter would call at the bank, change his own currency into dollars, and pay for the goods received. Neither the exporter nor the importer had to overcome any obstacles. They were free to deal with each other. In a word, the process of foreign selling and buying was a matter of routine. Shortly after 1929 this mechanism, which took so many years of effort to establish, crumbled. The whole process of doing business abroad had to be revamped. The foreign credit man naturally had to revise his attitude about granting credits abroad. He was forced to improvise and to create practical ways of overcoming the obstacles in his path, and to analyze more closely the factors affecting the credit of the importer. It has become extremely important, therefore, not toconsider the granting of foreign credits as an isolated function, since it involves three closely related risks the market, the currency of the country, and the credit of the importer. These three hazards must be examined simul taneously. It is logical to add too that, because of these complexities, export financing becomes the most important aspect of foreign commerce. Since export trade practices change frequently, it is essential for the foreign credit man continually to revise and adjust his ideas to the new ways of doing business. Above all, he must avoid the risk of falling into a mechanical formula in granting foreign credits. It should be mentioned also that export trade is not the sort of business that can be developed over night. It requires long-range planning and courage. It must be cultivated with care and patience. There is no longer an El Dorado beyond our shores. Each foreign market is highly competitive, vH viii PREFACE demanding individual initiative in the field of distribution and financing. Finally, in spite of the frequent changes that take place in foreign trade, its basic principles remain unchanged. Hence, the aim of this book is to deal with the problem of foreign credits from a practical point of view, but without neglecting to present its

Excerpt: The Kyoto Protocol is a protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC or FCCe, aimed at fighting global warming. The UNFCCC is an international environmental treaty with the goal of achieving "stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system." The Protocol was initially adopted on 11 December 1997 in Kyoto, Japan and entered into force on 16 February 2005. As of November 2009, 187 states have signed and ratified the protocol. Under the Protocol, 37 industrialized countries (called "Annex I countries") commit themselves to a reduction of four greenhouse gases (GHG) (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, sulphur hexafluoride) and two groups of gases (hydrofluorocarbons and perfluorocarbons) produced by them, and all member countries give general commitments. Annex I countries agreed to reduce their collective greenh... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=16775

Studies on climate change have underscored two points. First that atmospheric commons, namely the Earth’s carbon absorbing capacity, is finite and depletable and that growth of emissions due to industrialization pose a threat to mankind. Secondly, it has been established that per capita emission is strongly correlated with economic prosperity. It is also recognized that without increasing in emi...

Lighting Company's Carbon Footprint Reduction Program

Seminar: The Carbon Reduction Commitment and Landlords

Practical guidance and advice on the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC), the new regulatory legislation facing landlords, property owners and large businesses, is the focus of a seminar from Birmingham office design and fit out company, Morgan Lovell.

The breakfast session, due to take place on Tuesday 13th October at leading law firm Martineau’s offices at No 1 Colmore Square in Birmingham, will provide advice on capturing and monitoring energy usage, as well as covering many of the legalities surrounding the CRC.

Legal guidance will be delivered by James Spreckley, Partner at Martineau. James will cover the purpose of the legislation before discussing some of the implications and what it means to future and existing leases.

Morgan Lovell’s sustainability manager, Lara Conaway, will then provide practical solutions to prepare for the CRC, including a demonstration of new technologies that will help monitor and measure energy usage in buildings.

The session will end with an optional tour of Morgan Lovell’s wireless mesh metering solution, after which delegates will be invited to join the speakers for a complimentary breakfast and networking.

Lara said: “Most businesses are now well aware of the CRC legislation, how it works, and the cost implications and penalties of non-compliance.  This session is designed to give practical advice and guidance to measures that landlords and property owners can put in place now, in preparation for the commencement date in 2010.”

Starting at 8.15am, the session includes breakfast and qualifies delegates for CPD credits. Registration is free, but places are limited. To register go to www.morganlovell.com/events or call 01462 490609.

An alternative date has been organised in London on Wednesday 23rd September in Morgan Lovell’s offices.
