The Emission Trading Scheme (SFT)
European Union's Emission Trading Scheme – A Hope For A Greener Future
The EU airlines will soon be in the throes of what can be considered as an integral factor in determining their bottom line. EU's Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) is slated to include the airline industry with effect from 2012 and flights operating to, from and within the European Union will benefit from this scheme.
As per this program, air carriers exceeding their prescribed quota of emission can either buy carbon credits from organizations legitimized to sell them or make concerted efforts to reduce emissions by investing in sophisticated machinery. The total emissions by an air carrier must still remain within the stipulated cap as mandated by the government.
Those air carriers who have not exceeded their quota of emissions can benefit by transferring these carbon credits on to their balance sheets. One carbon credit is equivalent to one ton of carbon dioxide, or in some markets, carbon dioxide equivalent gases. Carbon credits create an environment for lowering greenhouse emissions by giving a fiscal value to the cost of polluting the air. By allowing carbon credits to be bought and sold, air carriers can seek out the most cost-effective way of reducing their emissions, either by investing in new aircraft engines or by purchasing credits from another operator who already has excess 'capacity' owing to its fuel efficient practices. The prime motive behind this scheme is to enable the least polluting players to win. They can pass on the full cost of carbon credits gained on to their customers which will result in lowering of ticket prices.
When it comes to controlling the emission of carbon and on a bigger perspective, reduce the green house gases, the emissions trading program should not be confined to the airlines in the civil aviation industry.
The travel agents and tour operators play an important role as they act as an interface between the travellers and the airlines. The travel agents as a part of their daily operations recommend, plan and book flights and holidays for a number of travellers.
In what would for sure be considered as a welcoming step by the travel agents, airlines and environment friendly people and organisations alike, the regulatory bodies such as the IATA, ABTA, and ICAO etc should reward those travel agents who book higher number of tickets on more fuel efficient airlines, like southalltravel.co.uk, one of the leading travel agencies in the UK.
The airlines could be provided ratings based upon their carbon emissions, much similar to the European Union (EU) energy rating label which is seen on all the white goods that reveals the appliances' exact energy consumption and its energy efficiency rating.
Although, largely criticised by many commercial quarters directly or indirectly affected by the scheme, there is a unanimous opinion and hope by the participating nations that emission trading scheme will accelerate moves to a low carbon economy as envisioned by the European Union.
