Electrochemical Reduction of Halogenated Organic Pollutants: Application of Marcus theory to the reductive cleavage of carbon-halogen bonds

Electrochemical Reduction of Halogenated Organic Pollutants: Application of Marcus theory to the reductive cleavage of carbon-halogen bonds

The worldwide use of volatile organic compounds and halogenated organic compounds is estimated to be more than 30 billion pounds per year. Organic halides, especially, chlorofluorocarbons, polychloroethenes, polychloroethanes, and polychloromethanes form one of the main groups of environmental pollutants present in the soils and underground waters of many industrial sites. The contamination due to...

LED Lighting – The Way Forward

Why Choose LED Lighting? - 7 Good Reasons!

1. Extremely Efficient.

2. Very Economical.

3. High Longevity.

4. Ecologically Friendly.

5. Healthier Illumination.

6. High Light Quality.

7. No Heat.

LED Lighting Is...............

No.1    Extremely Efficient

A quality LED bulb has a high lumens per watt coefficient. Lumens in layman's terms meaning the measurement of the amount of light produced by the bulb. Whilst some take Watts as being the measure of the bulbs output this is not strictly the case. Particularly in LED bulbs the efficiency of the LED package is significant and quality can make a big difference.

A 6 Watt LED Bulb with a world leading Cree MC-E LED Package @ 360 Lumen = 60 Lumen per Watt

A 35 Watt Halogen would average 12.5 Lumen per Watt.

No.2    Very Economical

A quality LED bulb of say 5 Watts on for 5 hours per day would cost approx. 91p per year to run calculated at 10p per unit of electricity.

This would be suitable replacement for say a 35 Watt halogen which would cost £6.37 per year to run.

No.3    High Longevity

A typical quality LED bulb would last a minimum of 35,000 hours. Used for 5 hours per day it would last over 16 years. It would last much longer but after this time the output would deteriorate and eventually need replacing. This could take another 5-8 years as LED's tend not to ‘blow' like halogen or incandescent. A typical halogen would need replacing 16 times (annually) used for the same amount of time per day over that period.

No.4    Ecologically Friendly

By requiring much less electricity LED's reduce ones carbon footprint whilst also eliminating the chances of pollution as they do not contain harmful substances such as Mercury, Tungsten and Phosphorous which can easily end up in our landfills and ultimately find their way into our eco-system. This issue is high on the agenda of both the UK  & EU governments.

No.5   Healthier Illumination

LED's have a much higher Colour Rendering Index when compared to halogen, incandescent or fluorescent.

Recent medical research has revealed the dramatic effect of light quality on the general health and longevity of humans and also animals.

No.6   High Light Quality

LED's do not produce harmful Ultra violet or Infra red light.

No.7   No Heat

LED's run cool! Unlike halogen the risk of combustion by overheating is virtually nil.

Summary.

Whilst it is a fact that quality LED package production is not a cheap process and this is reflected in the cost of a quality bulb, the savings made over halogen and incandescent bulbs taken over the usable life span of the LED is enormous. For instance here in the UK a 4 Watt Cree LED over a 35 Watt Halogen would save over a £100 per bulb used 5 hours per day for 15 years. So a typical kitchen with say at least 6 downlights would save well over £600. (Calc at 10p per KWHr approx. current rate. Inc. cost of the LED and replacement halogen / incandescent).
Like most things on the market, levels of quality are miles apart - never buy a LED without knowing the LED package manufacturer ie Cree/Nichia/Sharp/Osram/Lumileds

So by making an investment in LED lighting you are not only saving money you are helping to save planet Earth!
