Buying Aero Bars, a Guide
If you participate in time trials, or competitive cycling at any level, lightweight cycling handlebars are a must. They resist drag, increase your aerodynamics and therefore improve your times and speed. So, it is crucial to have these racing handlebars whether you are an amateur or a professional.
But before you race out and buy a new pair of Aero Bars it helps to understand how they work.
Pedaling a bike always results in excess wind resistance due to your stance, which is sitting upright with your legs beneath you. This is not proper aero dynamics, and by nature just makes riding that much more difficult. In fact, the fastest bikes are designed completely different with the riders sitting back and their legs forward. This position decreases drag and wind resistance by such a great deal these bikes are able to acheive speeds of up to 70 mph or more.
Aero bars allow the rider to lean forward lowering their position over the handle bars and therefore allowing wind to pass over them with less drag. Since they are so light, they add less weight to carry up those long hills. Advanced materials covering the exterior, along with internal cable routing, reduces wind resistance further. The combination is extremely significant in your time trial and race.
Finding Aero bars is another challenge. They are specially made with high-tech materials. Secondly, you won't find them in just any bike shop. The company that makes Aero bars (Uberhund) has agreements with a few specialty stores.
